I had been at a loss as to how to finish off my cabinet door makeover project. You all gave me some great ideas, but I still really wanted to figure out how I could get some of my favorite lyrics on the cabinet without actually painting them. I knew I couldn't hand paint them, and I didn't want to do the time consuming stenciling. Thanks to Stephanie Lynn, I learned a new trick this week: how to print on fabric using my inkjet printer.
I am absolutely in love with how this project turned out. Part because it's completely my own creation, and part because I just think it has the right amount of sweet and simple.
Here's how I did it...
First, I cut out a piece of canvas dropcloth just slightly smaller than a piece of cardstock or similarly heavy paper.
Next, using Krylon Easy-Tack Repositionable Adhesive, I sprayed a thin layer on the cardstock and layed the fabric on top of it, smoothing as I went. I used a plastic scraper to ensure there were no air bubbles.
I placed the fabric/cardstock in my printer and hit print!
It's important to remember to leave enough of a border between the edge of the fabric and the edge of the paper, so the printer has something to grab. Also remember to double check the way your printer feeds and put the paper in correctly.
(Now, please note that while I'm giving instructions for a typical 8"x10" print, I have a large format printer and the paper for my actual project was 13"x19".)
That's it! It was so easy!!
I attached it to the cabinet door using the easy tack spray so it will be easy to change out the lyric when the mood hits. I am so pleased with this project, and with how our bedroom is really starting to come together.
My little model...whenever she sees a camera she begs to have her picture taken! This photo really sums it up...with love, anything is possible...even welcoming another child into your home when you get the call the do so. A little update - the adoption process is moving along, slowly but surely, and with any luck will be final before the end of the year. To read a little background, click here.

LOVE it! And the model is ADORABLE!!! What a great subject!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip on the tacky spray! I've been drooling over Pottery Barn Pillows and crying over the prices-but--I have some awesome rubber stamps-so have been thinking--stamp, enlarge, color, copy onto...fabric...make my OWN!
;) (although I am stuck with smaller size as I don't have a large printer) Can't wait to try it! Blessings, Sharon
P.S. I just saw the one shoe on, one off! Lol!
ReplyDeleteLOVE how that turned out, and I can't wait to try it. But what I loved more? Was the beautiful smile on your little girls face! Have a great day.

How cute is that. You can also set the ink by submerging the fabric in straight vinegar and then allow the fabric to air dry. Or if you are impatient like me, you can use a hairdryer to further set the ink.

ReplyDeleteThis looks great, Kristin. I think you made the right choice. The bedroom is really looking fantastic. I love printing on fabric... the possibilities are endless.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Your sign turned out great. I'll have to try that with my printer. Love your bedding.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty and your room is beautiful. I didn't know this was possible. I'd be afraid of destroying my printer.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. It looks like your room is really pretty. Love the white.
ReplyDeleteWOW! This is amazing! I think that the projects that you can think up on your own are so much more fulfilling!! I love this whole project, especially where you put it on the wall and the coloring! I may have to try it out myself :)

Love this!! The fabric looks so great framed that way! Great job. :)
ReplyDeleteBest of luck to you and your family for a speedy and hassle free adoption! Although I've seen printed fabric before, I really like how you attacked it to the door so it wasn't permanent. I see so many people modge podge stuff like that and wonder what they do when they get sick of it. Looks like you found an easier way to deal with that.
ReplyDeleteVery charming! Always wondered how the whole printing on fabric thing worked. Love the quote and love the little model:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great job, Kristin. Your project looks great and is the perfect touch above your inviting looking bed--cute model, too ;).
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your printer art! So chic!! It was featured as a LIST MAKER today. Feel free to stop by and grab a List Maker button!
