Painted Brick Fireplace

Before getting into the project I have to share with you, I need to give you all a big thank you for your sweet and supportive comments on my living room inspiration post. You really inspired me to get busy right away with the first project!

Those of you who have been following for a while know that I've been struggling with the thought of painting my fireplace for several years now. Part fear of commitment, and part...well, just plain fear.

I've "liked" the brick, but didn't "love" it. I always found it difficult to work with, color wise, to make it fit my style, and I never liked the wall color next to the brick.

After some urging from a friend (she promised we'd learn how to sandblast if I didn't like it), I woke up Saturday morning and decided today was the day I was finally going to do it.
I bit the bullet and after four years, I FINALLY painted the fireplace.

There's still a little bit of touch up to be done, but overall it's pretty much finished.

About halfway through I started having an anxiety attack about the finality of it all, but that subsided and I powered through. My kids were astoundingly good while I worked on this project that took me about three times longer than I thought it would.

Yes, I'm the crazy person who decided to paint on a Saturday when my kids were home all day.

(Isn't this little white birdie adorable? $2.99 at Target, with the Valentine's Day decor!)

There are tons of tutorials out there. Trust me, I read them all. I eventually found this one over at Young House Love that made it sound the easiest!

I'm not going to give a hugely detailed step-by-step, but this is basically how I did it.

Supplies: wire brush, damp cloth, 1" paintbrush, 1/2" roller brush, Behr masonry paint in pure white.

Prep: First, I vacuumed the brick to remove cobwebs, dust, etc. I took a wire brush to the brick to remove any loose mortar and remove the texture treatment, then vacuumed again. Finally, I wiped the brick down with a lightly damp cloth, and vacuumed again.

Paint: I went over surface areas with a 1/2" roller brush, then using a 1" brush, I painted in all of the grooves. This is what really took the time. Brick is porous so it soaks up paint, but the mortar is also very uneven and difficult to get good coverage. I really had to swish my brush back and forth to get it covered, and I had to go over it three times. I probably spent a total of four hours painting, if not more. I also painted the fireplace cover (just the frame, not the doors).

(The log and the candles were placed there by my grandmother. Haven't had the heart yet to remove them)

A lot of the tutorials out there say how easy it is to paint a fireplace, and I guess in theory it is, but it does take quite a bit of time and effort. However, that being said, I'm thrilled with the results!

I still haven't decided if I want to lighten up the walls, and I'm not sure if I'll be putting the mirror back up, or if I want to get something smaller. What do you think?

Next project...window treatments...

  2. Your fireplace looks great! I like it much better in the white and I love that you had a good friend that inspired you to face your fears and promised to help if it didn't work out. Those kind of friends are hard to find and definately keepers!
You mentioned your next project is window treatments and since that is what I do for a living, I thought I would offer my help in any way when you are ready to tackle that project. Just let me know if you need design help or sewing help and I will be happy to teach you any window treatment you want to do. Also, I know great sources for affordable fabrics.
    Thanks for sharing, Jules

  3. It looks great. I am thinking of doing a make over on my fireplace too. I am thinking of just doing a dry brush effect. I am also a little worried so for now I am working on the foyer! Dianntha

  5. Brave woman. Some days I wish I would/could paint mine... then I think no, not yet. Maybe someday. I just noticed the candle in the mason jar in your header. Has it been there long? I thought I was a clever girl when I did that around Christmas (I was inspired by another blog, much more elegant than my jar - - or was I inspired by you?)- I used kosher salt (the store brand that wasn't quite what I wanted to cook with) to get that 'snow' effect. Is this great minds thinking alike - or have you had it up for a while? Anyway= you do inspire me. Long ago and far away I was a single mom, it's a tough, wonderful way of life. Enjoy this time - our babies grow up.

  8. Your fireplace is such a success. I must admit to suffering the same problem where my wooden furniture is concerned. I would love to paint but fear the outcome and covering the beautiful wood in paint. What if it looked dreadful - so wood it stays. Maybe one day just like you....B:)

  13. It turned out beautiful Kristin!!! You did a wonderful job. I painted mine about 10 years ago and it has held up great. I only touched it last year when we repainted the whole room. I love the little birdie too, I might have to go look for him today. :)

  17. Love it, white makes everything look better in my opinion. I vote for hanging the mirror up again, I think it would look pretty.

  18. LOVE this makeover, and love that mirror so would use it and love the wall colors next to the stark of the white. I think, aside from putting that mirror back up you have a fantastic completed project.

Now, the metal painted......that doesn't bubble up and peel once it gets super hot?

Hope not, that would be quite awful.

My last house I actually sold still waiting for the nerve to paint it white.

I applaud and admire your courage.

    GREAT JOB!

  20. Where do I start?! Love the transformation!! I love the simple decor. I'm going to be getting that bird from Target...TODAY. I love the wall color as is...gives some warmth to the white of the fireplace. I think the mirror would look great, but before you put it up, play around. with other looks. I've found that I'll just keep wonderin' if I go with status quo...can't wait to see what you do!

  23. I love it!! It brightens up that whole wall I think! It took me 4 years to paint mine too! Everything I put on my mantel now seems to pop out more whereas before it just got lost in all that brick. It was a lot more difficult then I thought it would be but I'd do it again in a heartbeat! I think the mirror would look great up there!
