How I'm Getting My Household Under Control

I've decided to shift my posting focus from Home Decor to Organization. I promise it's not forever, just bear with me for a moment. Remember when I talked about my "not doing it all" a couple of weeks ago when I said that no one would want to see the two week old birthday party crap piled in my living room? Yeah, well that was a week and a half ago, and it's still there. At least it's all contained to one laundry basket now, so that's progress, right?

Well here's that problem, I don't have a plan. I've got two small kids who like to make big messes all over the house. I've got a cat who sheds like crazy. And I'm just freaking exhausted.

So here's what I've begun to realize. I can't get organized if my house is disorganized.

Does that make sense?

So I'm changing focus. My goal is that each week, I get one room organized. Actually, that seems a little ambitious, so maybe it will be two weeks. Either way, it will be all about purging, decluttering, and organizing.

Last weekend, I spent four hours straight cleaning and organizing my bedroom. Just the BEDROOM! (*sidenote, did you know that Peeps marshmallows don't dry out like they used to? How do I know that? Because I found a half empty package of them in my closet leftover from the kid's Easter baskets goodies. Yes, it was THAT bad). It's 90% finished and I'm hoping to complete this particular project this week. Then on to the the living room and kitchen.

What's my motivation you ask?

I happened upon a blog called A Slob Comes Clean a few weeks ago. FINALLY! Organizational tips that really seemed to "get" me. I am not one of those people who LOVES cleaning their homes. If you are, you might want to just stop reading now. The blog author, Dana White, has written an e-Book called 28 Days to Hope for Your Home, and she was kind enough to give me one to review.

I have tried to follow many a "Four Weeks to Organizing Your Home" type of program, but the fact is, if my home isn't "neat and tidy" to begin with, this just isn't going to work for me. While I'm decluttering my junk drawer, the dishes are piling up and so is the laundry.

Dana's steps are clear and simple, and I actually WANTED to follow them. She suggested that I didn't just need to "clean," I needed to change habits.

Still with me?

So I read through the e-Book, and began to implement some of the suggestions and I've already seen improvements. It kind of kicked me in the pants and got me out of this cleaning rut I've been in. And by rut, I mean, I don't wanna do it.

It's amazing how overwhelming a task can become the longer you put it off. I never realized it until reading this e-book. The key is understanding WHY your home has fallen into chaos. Dana's intro described me to a "T" and I finally understood why none of those other programs worked for me. I would look at pictures of their perfectly decorated and organized homes, and knew it was too far of a reach for me to ever get there so I gave up.

Like Dana says, this book is NOT for the mildly disorganized!

Well folks, I'm on week three; my sink is empty, the laundry is caught up and the kitchen floor and counters are tidy AND I actually have time to relax once the kids go to bed and not feel guilty about it. I can sense that habits are changing, and it's a really good thing.

Thank you Dana!

If you are interested in purchasing Dana's e-Book, 28 Days to Hope for Your Home, just click the link to be taken to her blog. It's only $5 and I promise you won't regret it!!

All opinions in this post are my own.  I was given a complimentary copy of the e-book "28 Days to Hope For Your Home" to review the product, but I only share and recommend products I would use myself.

Don't forget: the Attitude of Gratitude series begins this Thursday, with my special guest, Vanessa from At the Picket Fence!

Last Minute Halloween Craft/Treat Idea

My "day job" is Administrator in a Church office, so I see a lot of people on a daily basis. A few of them know that about the blog, and follow on Pinterest and/or Facebook (hi ladies!!).

Today one of my friends came in and brought me a little Halloween treat that she found while surfing Pinterest. I told her I had to share it on the blog!

While I have seen this in marshmallow form before, I like this one so much better!!!

Tic Tacs?? Brilliant - and it's got it's own packaging.

You can get the free printable at Somewhat Simple, and they have more than just the Ghost one.

See? Aren't they cute??

They are all really cute, and a great idea for a quick and easy treat.

And speaking of cute...

See you here on Thursday for the beginning of the Attitude of Gratitude series!

How to Clean Up Your Blog and Make it More User Friendly

{Not a blogger? Scroll to the bottom of this post and help us bloggers out by sharing your thoughts and answering a couple of questions.}

When I am consulting for blog designs, one the the most frequent requests is to help "clean up" the blog layout. If you're a regular visitor, you may notice that I've recently made some changes to my own blog over the past few days in an effort to make my blog more clean, streamlined and user friendly.

Blog design is just like interior design. It's subjective - Everyone has their own personal taste. But there are things you can do to optimize your reader's experience when they visit your blog. I mean, you want someone to stick around when they visit you for the first time, right?

We all know that content is King, but if your blog is too cluttered, no one will even see it.

Here are a few changes I've made to help make my blog more user friendly and reduce visual clutter.

1. LIMIT THE BUTTONS IN YOUR SIDEBAR and POSTS

I can't tell you how many times I visit a blog and there are thirty buttons cluttering the sidebar. Not only is this not visually appealing, it creates a slower load time for your blog. Place buttons from your favorite blogs in a separate page or post, and link to it from your menu bar or sidebar.

This goes for party posts as well. You may have a huge list of linky parties that you like to join in when you can, but if you don't link up to each of those parties on a regular basis, consider just placing text links or buttons only for the parties you link up that particular post to. If you prefer to use the party buttons, use this tutorial from Gwenny Penny during the Beginner Blogger Series last spring to help streamline the buttons in your post.

2. CREATE A GALLERY OF YOUR FAVORITE PROJECTS or RECIPES

When someone new visits your blog, whether through a Google search, or Pinterest, or from a linky party, they obviously stopped by because you offered something they were looking for. Make it easy for them to explore your blog by offering a gallery of your favorite or most popular posts and projects.

If you look at my menu bar, you will see that I have links for "Projects" and "Recipes." Each of these links leads to a static page with an image gallery.

If you have a linky subscription, this is pretty easy to do by just creating a private list of your own links. (This is the way I did it).

However, if you don't have a linky account, you can use this tutorial I found at Laura's Crafty Life to create your own project gallery, then link to them from your menu bar or sidebar.

This would also be a great way to replace the labels cloud you may have in you sidebar. (Ask yourself - Do I ever use those when I visit a blog?)

3. HELP YOUR READERS FIND YOUR MOST RECENT POSTS

Some readers only stop by once a week, or even just a few times a month. What??? Make sure they don't miss a thing by adding a recent posts widget.

I've added a recent posts widget to the top of my posts. I'm really excited because I've been wanting to add this for a while and I finally found a great (and super easy) tutorial at Blogger Plugins. I love this because it allows visitors to see what they've missed if they've been away for a few days, and it shows photos from the posts rather than just a link list like the Blogger Archives gadget.

4. CONDENSE GADGETS IN A TABBED WIDGET

This is my other favorite thing about my blog right now! Placing all of those gadgets in your sidebar, it can sure get cluttered up quickly.

I contained my Email subscription, search bar, and buttons all in one this gadget so they're no longer taking up so much prime real estate in my sidebar. You can contain up to four gadgets in this box. That frees up a ton of space!

Tutorial found at Blogger Sentral.

5. ENCOURAGE COMMENTS BY MAKING IT EASY

Please, please, please do not require me to decipher a bunch of skewed letters in order to comment on your blog. I really, really want to leave you nice comments, but half the time it takes me three or four tries to get the letters right, and by then, I'll probably just leave. Posts and tutorials on how to do this have been written on countless blogs, but Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says it best. (click the image below to be taken to the post).

6. LIMIT CUSTOM FONT USAGE

There are tons of cute and fun (and FREE) fonts out there. I mean, just looking at dafont.com makes my head spin. But it's not necessary to use all of them on your blog, or in your header & menu bar. It becomes crazy busy with all of that to look at, and the eyes don't know where to focus. Also, be sure to include white space. Trust me, white space is your friend!

source

Consider limiting to two or three fonts in your header, sidebar, buttons, etc. In general, the most complimentary font combinations are one serif and one non-serif font. (Examples of serif fonts are Times New Roman, Garamond, Trajon Pro; Sans Serif fonts are Ariel, Tahoma, Impact). With fancy, swirly and handwritten fonts, you would want to pair them up with something a little more modest. Basically you want complimentary but contrasting fonts rather than fonts that look similar.

Also, when it comes to the fonts in your posts, research has shown that sans serif fonts (Ariel, Tahoma, Verdana) are easier to read online, and serif fonts (Times, Garamond, Trajon) in print.

7. MAKE IT EASY FOR ME TO CONTACT AND LEARN MORE ABOUT YOU

Sometimes when I'm inspired by a particular post, I want to ask a question or share something personal that I'd rather not leave in the comments. But I need a way to do that. Place a link to your email in your sidebar, or better yet, your menu bar.

You could also add it in your About Me page. What, you don't have one? Create a page that I can easily find so I can read more about you, your likes, why you blog, and what your favorite Starbucks drink is.

I'm working on updating mine, but you can find it here: About Me (Kristin, Simply Klassic)

8. LOOK AT THE BLOGS YOU LOVE, then LOOK AT YOUR OWN BLOG

How often do you really LOOK at your own blog? I mean, you look at other blogs all the time, right? Take some time to really look at the design and layouts of your favorite blogs and see what truly appeals to you. Take notes. Bookmark (oh my, am I dating myself?), I mean PIN your favorite designs. Then when you are ready for a new design, you can show your ideas to your designer, or take those inspirations and design for yourself.

(Remember, if you're in the market for a new design, I'm your girl! I will be taking a break during the holidays but am currently placing inquiries on a wait list for January 2013)

I hope that you found some of these ideas helpful, and I'd love your feedback.

What, besides content, makes a blog stand out to you, especially on your first visit? (good or bad)
Is it the general overall design, or is there something specific?

Is there anything that really bugs you about a blog's design, or are you able to focus solely on the content?

(Please refrain from referencing specific blogs in your answers. Thank you!)

Having an Attitude of Gratitude

If I've learned anything in the past year, it's that life, love and all of the things that go with it can be too easily taken for granted. This year has taught that in order to live a life of meaning, a life that's worth something, you have to be grateful for what you have already.

Blogging is all about sharing, and in turn, inspiring.

I was recently inspired to write a series of posts on gratitude, and how it's present in my life. I've asked fifteen of my friends to join me in an effort to inspire an Attitude of Gratitude in YOU  in this season of thanksgiving, and I hope you'll join us.

Beginning November 1 and right up until Thanksgiving, I, along with fifteen of my blogger friends, will be here sharing thoughts on gratitude. What we thankful for, how we teach their kids to be grateful, and how we find beauty in the struggles are just a few of the topics we'll be discussing.

I'm so GRATEFUL to have joining me -

Kristen from Ella Claire

You can read my own Attitude of Gratitude post here.

Each of these amazing ladies has a unique story to tell. Some of them you may know and some may be new to you. I consider each of them a friend. I hope that you make time to stop by each day in November (Monday thru Friday) to welcome them and see what unique thoughts they have to offer.

Be here November 1, when At the Picket Fence's own Vanessa will kick off the series. There will be a link up available for those wanting to share their own stories as well (so get those posts ready!).

I would love for you to grab a button and share the series with your readers.

Join us, and be inspired!

How This Single Mom Does it All

Truth?

I DON'T.

There, I said it.

Blogging is a special world all on it's own. A world of beautifully decorated rooms, delicious looking meals and treats, and well groomed, happy children.

See?

Trust me when I say this - my bedroom has not looked like this since last spring.

Don't these pancakes look delicious? They were a nice departure from the pre-made, frozen pancakes I usually serve.

Isn't this photo of my kids just as sweet as can be? You can really see how much they love each other, can't you?

Well, let me break it down for you: the photographer told them to look at each other, and my son proceeded to knock my daughter in the head. Hard. And then she cried.

Looks can be deceiving, especially on blogs. We love to post beautiful photos and we love to look at beautiful photos. After all, who wants to see pictures of birthday party crap strewn all over my living room two weeks after the party? Or the sink full of dishes that never seems to be empty? Or the loads of clean laundry sitting on the counter in the laundry room, waiting to be folded, or the cat hair in the hallway waiting to be vacuumed?

Not me. And I live in it!

Don't get me wrong, I think moms in general have one of the toughest jobs in the world, and I am grateful every day for my kids and the way they came into my life. But I don't have it all together, not even a little bit, I don't do it all.

I forget to pay bills. At least once a week I have to run back home because we've forgotten the school library book, or the lunch, or the nap sheets. I serve chicken nuggets at least once, if not twice a week. And sometimes I forget to go to the grocery store and we're out of bread, and milk, and cereal, and we have cheese quesadillas for breakfast. (sidenote - blogger does not like my spelling of quesadilla. Apparently blogger does not speak Spanish).

Like I was saying...unpaid bills, forgotten lunches, chicken nuggets. That's our life on most days. I blog because I love it, I create projects because it's fun, and I share recipes that are simple and easy to make because I really enjoy cooking. But often times it's at the expense of having a clean house, or a full eight hours of sleep, and I'm ok with that.

I'm not a supermom, though I'd like to be, and sometimes, being a single mom sucks.

My kids are a handful, I'm exhausted, and my house is a mess.
Hopefully that means I'm just like you!

(Please know that this post is kind of tongue in cheek, not meant to evoke that I think I'm a bad mom. I'm a GREAT mom! I'm just not SUPERMOM! LOL)

Canning Jar Ring Garland & a Simple Fall Mantel

I've placed a little challenge on myself. Well, Kristen pushed a little.

I'm going to make more stuff with canning jar rings.

Yah baby. I can tell you're excited.

So anyway, canning jar rings are apparently pretty versatile, because I've come up with five more crafts/projects that are just as crazy easy as this silly little pumpkin.

Here's the first:

I cut the twine from the canning jar ring pumpkin.

I know you just gasped. Yes, I disassembled the pumpkin.

Then I tied the rings together with twine.

The very same twine that held that little pumpkin together.

Yay for recycling!

And strung it up on my mantel.

In the process I changed up my mantel a little bit, which gave me a chance to add my little white pumpkins with the twine.

So cute and simple! (or is this one the lame one?)

I'm pretty happy with it!

(And P.S. She'll be getting a little upgrade for my next project! - Yes, it's a she).

A Little Q & A (My Top Five Favorite Facebook Questions & Prize Winners!!)

Those of you who follow along on Facebook, may have seen the little Q & A announcement I put out earlier this week. I wanted to know what YOU want to know, about me! AND I offered up prizes for my top five favorite questions, that I would then turn around and answer on the blog.

This was such a fun game that I think we may need to do this more often! You had some great questions, and I had fun coming up with some answers for you. Geez some of y'all are nosy! {kidding}

Now, I spontaneously promised a small prize to my top five favorite questions. While I'd love to join you for it, I'd love to at least buy you a Salted Caramel Mocha Latte, so I'll be sending $5 Starbucks gift cards to my favorites. If you see your name and question below, please email me your address ASAP! (and if you have a blog, let me know and I'll add a link).

{{for the record, this is my new favorite drink!!}}

Alright, here we go....

(1)
You are one creative lady! When do you feel the most creative? Does it come in spurts? Do you see something and get inspired by it? What triggers your creativity? I know I get inspired by other people's creativity and when that happens, look out!
{from Kathy Jackson}

Awww, thanks Kathy! This one kind of made me laugh though, because I still have a hard time seeing myself as a creative person, or as someone who can inspire others. It's humbling to have people come to me with questions or just with praise. I appreciate it more than you know!

All over the internet, ideas and tutorials abound. I get some inspiration from them, but really, each project is different. Sometimes I just all of a sudden will see an item differently, almost by accident. For example, the little Junkin' Pumpkin that took the blog world by storm? I had laid my little canning jar ring wreath down on a table to put it away. I happened to look at it as I passed the table, and there it was, and it was like, "Huh, that kind of looks like a pumpkin. Wonder what it would look like if I added some sticks." Boom. Other times, I've needed "something" (like the dress-up rack in my daughter's room) and I just walked around from room to room, and in my storage space, until inspiration struck.

Most of the time though, I see something someone else has done, or in a magazine or Pottery Barn catalog, and I think, "Hey, I can do that!" Yes, I'm an idea stealer.

(2)
What's your favorite scary movie?
{from Marinela Glass}

Oh my gosh I HATE scary movies!!! Ok, hate is a strong word, but I reeeeally dislike them. I had to stop watching Criminal Minds (TV show) because it would keep me up at night, quite certain that someone was sneaking around in my backyard and was going to all of a sudden show up in my window. (The fact that I am typing this at 11 pm is not helping). I do enjoy a good thriller, but not when I'm sleeping alone!

I do really love "Scream" though; does that count?

(3)
What's your best suggestion for a single mom who wants to be crafty but can't find the time? Money? In my own case laundry and cleaning seem to always loom overhead, it makes it hard to justify creating a new project.
{from Kara Lynn Mueller}

I say, BE CRAFTY! Find a way to do it. Making time for yourself and doing something you love, makes you happy, and a happy person is a happier parent. The dishes and laundry can wait. Now, I'm not saying let your house get all dirty and smelly, but take some time, even if it's just an hour or two a week, and do something crafty, if that's what makes you happy. Trust me, my house is piled with dirty dishes and laundry most days, you just don't see that in the pictures.

It doesn't take a lot of money to be crafty. Just visit your local Dollar Store and see what inspires you. Like Kate did to make these wall hangings.

Figure out what inspires you, and make it happen!

(4)
What will YOU be for Halloween?
{from Jodi Reuter}

This one really made me laugh out loud. I have not dressed up for Halloween since I was eleven (I think). And even then, my costume sucked. I threw on a LA Kings sweatshirt (BOO!!), carried a hockey stick and blacked out a tooth.

I'm sure my kids would love it though. Maybe I'll consider it...next year!

(5)
As a single mom what is your most prized time management tip?
{from Jessica Sage}

I am AWFUL at time management. I get caught up doing a project and then before I know it it's 11 pm and I still have five things to do before I can go to bed. Oh, and I've usually started the project around 10 pm.

However, I do have a pretty good schedule going when it comes to my kids. I thrive on structure and schedules, and thankfully, so do my kids (well, kids in general). We have a set routine in the morning, and in the evenings, and they know what's expected of them. That has helped tremendously with bedtimes, and getting ready for school in the morning. It helps me (and my sanity) too!

Truthfully, time management is something I need to work on, and I've actually considered purchasing an e-book or something to help. I just haven't found the time to do it yet...

***************************************

Thank you to everyone who commented with your questions. I'll answer some more on Facebook over the next week.

What did you think of the game? Should it be a monthly thing??

(By the way, you should really be following Simply Klassic on Facebook if you're not already! All the cool kids are doing it!)

Banana Bread Pancakes

For some reason, fall seems like the perfect time to try out new comfort food recipes. We finally received some much coveted rain last week, only to be back up to 90 today. Nonetheless I decided to make pancakes Sunday morning, and wanted to add a little flavor of fall.

Even if Mother Nature thinks it's still summer.

I have a go-to pancake recipe that I love, and that I shared here. I didn't change it at all, just added bananas and spices. (We are a nut free home, but you could certainly add some walnuts or pecans to this recipe. I think it would be yummy!)

1 cup flour
2 tsp Baking Powder
2 Tbsp Sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 egg
1 cup milk
2 Tbsp oil or melted butter
2 bananas, mashed with a fork
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Mix the dry ingredients with a fork or whisk. Make a well in the center and add wet ingredients; whisk together until lumps are gone. Add mashed bananas and mix well.

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Pour 1/4 cupfuls of batter onto lightly greased skillet and cook until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip with a spatula and cook until browned on the other side.

Makes about 8-10 pancakes. These are good just on their own or with a little syrup.

Enjoy!

Apple Picking

Some days you have to just blow off responsibility and just do something fun with your kids.

I don't want them to look back on their childhood
and remember their mom sitting in front of a computer,
not having time for them.

A few weekends ago I decided we needed to make some memories.

We drove the 70 or so miles to Riley's Farm, a local orchard near Yucaipa, California.

It gave me a chance to spend some quality time with my kids,
and brush up on my photography skills at the same time.

(Can I just take a second and say how much I LOVE the Pioneer Woman's Photoshop Actions sets??? If you use Photoshop, or Photoshop Elements, you should really check them out.)

The kids had to stop and write their names in the dirt on the way to the orchard.

Using Pioneer Woman's B&W Action, and "Bring Out the Eyes."

Love.

The kids had so much fun picking their apples right off the trees.

We ended up with several little apples that probably weren't quite ready, but that's ok. It was all about having fun together!

And fun we had!

Not only did we pick apples, but strawberries as well.

Coop picked a flower for me. :)

There weren't a ton of strawberries left, but we sure had fun searching for the hints of red under those green leaves!

They filled their baskets to the brim, but by the time we made it to the car, they were only half full!

The scenery was spectacular.

It was a beautiful day, even if it was 90 degrees!

Tiki Room / Luau Birthday Party

It's finally over!

I decided I needed this party to be stress free, so I let go of a lot of the complicated ideas I'd wanted to use (and that I usually do!)

And you know what? no one noticed!

The theme was a simple, subtle nod to Disneyland's Enchanted Tiki Room, which is my kids' favorite attraction.

Although that could just be be about the Dole Whip.

I've got lots of pictures, so I'll mostly let them speak for themselves but will try to elaborate as I can.

Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments.

Since they each had their own separate parties last year, I decided make it easy on myself and plan a combo party this time around. I would prefer to give them each their own personalized party, but with birthdays three weeks apart, it just made sense to do it this way.

They didn't seem to mind!

Guests were greeted by an adorable ALOHA banner found at a local party supply. Can I just tell you how hard it is to find Luau party supplies in September???

Of course you can't have a Tiki Room party with out the birds!

The tables were decorated simply with a white tablecloth, burlap runner, and beautiful orchids from  Trader Joe's.

For the food table, I just picked up a bunch of tropical looking plants at my local Home Depot and wrapped the pots in burlap.

We'll be planting them in our yard next week. I love double duty decorating.

The kids each got Ukuleles as souvenirs from our Hawaiian vacation in August so we added them as decor.

Found this little guy on a whim at the Goodwill.

Kept the food simple - fruit cups (individual servings of pineapple, oranges and kiwi), Kettle style potato chips, and veggies.

We also had Hawaiian pizza to round out the lunch.

I served the potato chips in large cupcake papers. I can't stand a bunch of little hands in the chips bowl, so this was a great way to avoid that.

You can't have a Hawaiian party without Hawaiian punch!

Cute parrot straws came from US Toy Company.

My mom made cupcakes, and they looked just like they came from a bakery.

I had good intentions of making faux Dole Whips, but in the end it was just easier to serve Pineapple Sherbet.

Topped off with a paper umbrella and a cherry, my son exclaimed, "These are just like the Tiki Room!"

Mission accomplished!

Each of the guests went home with a small bucket, filled with bubbles, sunglasses, a Tiki necklace, and a pineapple lollipop and tropical fruit snacks.

We do not have a pool, but my good friend does and she graciously offered to host the party at her home (Thanks Diane!!). The kids were thrilled, and it gave us a chance to actually enjoy the heat. (which we are just about finished with, thank goodness!)

One of our favorite babysitters is also a Polynesian dancer.

She and her friend came and put on a show for the guests.

All of the kids danced along - except mine.

It was really a beautiful day.

Did I do everything I wanted to do? Nope.

Did I finish all of those cute decorations I'd wanted to make? Nope.

But did it matter in the end?

Look at those faces, and you tell me ~
