I'm definitely NOT a risk taker in my life. But in my decorating...yeah, not much of a risk taker there either.
I was flipping through the Ballad Designs catalog the other day and fell in love with a photo. So in love that I was determined go to great lengths to try and bring some of it into my home.
The main thing in the photo I was interested in?
COLOR!
Yes, I decided I wanted to include some color in a big bold way.
My plan: Paint one dining room wall in an BOLD accent color and add BOLD new curtains.
So I went to check out Benjamin Moore paint colors. They didn't have the one from the catalog so I picked one I though was similar, in a sample size, and painted the wall. I started out with just a small space but really couldn't decide if I liked it from that, so I decided to paint the whole. wall.
Complete FAIL. I thought I would love the greenish wall with the new modern curtains, and in reality, the curtains look kind of cool with the color.
The problem? I'm not a BOLD person. I like my neutrals, my grays and browns and whites. I love looking at photos of colorful rooms, pretty patterned curtains, and stenciled walls. It's just not for me. And I'm ok with that.
The fabulous thing about paint - you can paint over it!
So I tweaked things a bit. Remembering that I had 3/4 of a quart of gray paint from Cooper's dresser makeover, I grabbed my brush and covered that icky yellowy-green with my beloved gray.
It's tough to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new and unknown. I'm still learning the balance of seeing past the fear, and going all out crazy with it. Chartreuse on the wall kind of crazy.
I still wasn't crazy about the modern curtains, so I ended up going back to my creamy sheers.
But you know what? Now I LOVE it. I really, really love it. The addition of the deep gray accent wall was just enough "bold" to make me feel like I'd taken a step forward, so for me, that's a victory.
The coolest part of this whole experience is that I took a risk. In my world, it was a HUGE risk (ask Kate ~ I cannot tell you how many times she has received an enthusiastic text that says, "Hey guess what, I think I want to do this!" only to be followed up hours later with a more sullen, "yeah, I'm just not sure").
I have always been afraid to stray away from what I know and what I'm used to (my beloved neutrals) and try something new and different. I don't want to waste my time and have to redo something because I'm disappointed with the outcome. But I overcame that fear last weekend and went all out. Granted, it was an epic fail, but you know what? Failure is just a stepping stone in the creative process. I learned something about what I love, and the end result was perfect.
Thanks for stopping by today!

It's beautiful Kristin and HOORAY that you stepped out of your comfort zone to find what you truly love in your home. Everything looks so lovely and I can't wait to see it in person.
ReplyDeleteI especially love the {Um no} I think I will borrow that for future responses.
xoxo

I love that you are a risk taker! I actually did the same thing when I first moved into my home, except with a big, expensive rug... that didn't last more than a year :)
ReplyDeleteLove the new look! It is one thing to step out of your comfort zone and another thing to just jump off a bridge. I really couldn't see you loving that greenish color but the grey is just one step out of your norm - perfect! I do actually like both of the curtains but think I would pick the white too. Good for you for experimenting!!!
ReplyDeleteYou know...I think it was an epic success...because you stepped outside your comfort zone, you were able to find out just what it is you really love! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, I love the gutsy bold but at heart I'm a neutral lover for my own home! Sometimes magazines make it work so much better, I love your end results though, the grey and sheers are much better suited for the room!
ReplyDeleteloved your article. I'm like you in that I love it with someone else, but not for me. I have many sample colors that I think I will love, but sometimes don't even open them when I get them home.
ReplyDeleteThought maybe you might use that paint that failed to please you on the wall in another place in a small area, like inside the cabinet door, so that when you open it you get a flash of color, but don't have to live all the time with it.
Love the, "um no" ! I've had so many of those. For 15 years I had my own home and was constantly painting and experimenting with TONS of um no's. I knew what I loved but was sure I wanted other things and always came back to my "how can I be so boring" looks, neutrals ! you can experiment with neutrals I've found. But it is so much fun trying new things, then being able to stand back & laugh and say "ummm, no!! " you remind me of my younger self. Great job on painting too, you're really good ! I also agree with the woman who said use the color is small ways, like in pillows or the back of a cabinet, etc.
ReplyDeleteKeep having fun & keep that great sense of humor. That's why your blog is so awesome.
Love the story behind your wall and I think it's beat how decorating allows us to discover who we really are.
ReplyDeleteI woudln't look at it as a failure. It was just an experiment to see what you liked and didn't like. I think that with more green and less neon yellow, the color may have worked, however I'm fond of grey and really love the end result! The curtains were cool, but not quite right for the room. I too like the sheers better. I really like black and white and can see how those curtains may have worked with something else, in another room. I don't think you're too timid. Creativity is a "hunt and peck" kind of thing. As long as you're happy with the results, it doesn't matter how many experiments it took to get there! :)

I'm with you on the gray, love it! I like your curtains too, I didn't think they looked bad with the gray at all!
ReplyDeleteThat's why I say I need a few homes - so I can decorate them in all the styles I love, but would never really want to live with year round!
ReplyDeleteLove your gray choice - go with what you love - and luckily, it is only paint!

What a pretty room all together! Love the gray and the curtains!

This is hilarious! It makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only creature of habit. I LOVE color, but tend to be conservative and stick with the same palettes and solids.
ReplyDeleteI love that you tried the bold color but I must say that I agree with you on the neutral color being fabulous! Your DR looks beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love both sets of curtains - bold modern ones as well as the light sheers. Where are they from?
