  • Diced Mango – You can use fresh or frozen mango. See the recipe tips for more info.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream – Use your favorite variety!

How To Make A Milkshake

See recipe card below for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

Making a homemade milkshake is so easy! It’s also a perfect treat for older kids to help blend up.

Dice the Mango – The easiest way to do this is to slice the mango around the large pit, then make gridlines on the fruit and press on the skin to push the fruit out. Use a paring knife to slice off the cubes.

Add Ingredients – In a blender, add the mango (fresh or frozen), ice cream, and milk.

Blend – Pulse and blend until smooth. You can add more milk to reach the right consistency (especially if you use frozen mango).

Enjoy – Pour into glasses and top with garnishes, if using. We love to add a dollop of whipped cream and a sprig of fresh mint. Serve immediately.

Recipe FAQs

Is a mango milkshake healthy?

While a mango milkshake falls into the dessert category since it’s blended with ice cream, the mango does add a nutritional spin! Mango is not only high in vitamin C, but also has vitamin A, folate, and some fiber as well.

What are the ingredients for a milkshake?

A classic milkshake is just two ingredients – milk and ice cream. But you can add other mix-ins like fruit to make different variations.

How do you thicken a milkshake?

To thicken a plain milkshake, you can add more ice cream. To thicken a fruity milkshake like this recipe, you can also add more mango.

Helpful Tips

  • Fresh vs Frozen Mango – You can use fresh, frozen, or a combination! If you use all fresh, then the flavor is more mild and sweet (especially when you use very ripe mangos). With frozen, there is more tartness and you’ll need to add a little more milk to get the right consistency. If you use frozen and find it too tart, you can add a tablespoon of sugar to balance it out.
  • Dairy-Free – You can make this dairy free by substituting the milk and ice cream for your favorite dairy-free version.
  • Use Ripe Mango – When using fresh mango, you must use ripe (even over ripe) mango. If your mangos aren’t ripe then the extra acidity can curdle the milk.
  • Make it Spicy – You can add a little cardamom or Tajin to add a fun spin on the milkshake!
  • Variations – Add some diced pineapple or replace the milk with coconut milk for a truly tropical treat!

Storage

Milkshakes are best enjoyed immediately after blending, but you can store leftovers in the freezer. When you’re ready to enjoy, let it thaw slightly and give it another stir or even blend in the blender before enjoying.

If you store leftovers in the fridge, they will completely melt and lose their consistency.

Mango Milkshake

This mango milkshake is a smooth and creamy treat. You only need three ingredients – mango, ice cream, and milk!
Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Servings 2 milkshakes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups diced mango fresh or frozen
  • 3 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Optional garnishes: Whipped cream, extra chopped mango, mint sprig.

Instructions

  • In a blender, combine the mango, icecream and milk.
  • Pulse and blend until smooth, adding more milk until desired consistency is reached.
  • Pour milkshake into shake glasses and serve.

Notes

Using fresh, fully ripe (almost over ripe) mango is best. Personally, I prefer this recipe with half fresh and half frozen but it’s fully possible to make it with just fresh or frozen.
It is very important not to use an unripe mango as the milkshake will be sour and it may even cause the milk to slightly curdle. When using frozen, there is a bit more tartness. You will need to use just a tad more milk if you choose frozen.
