First Day of School Printable Chalkboard Signs

Here it is, the moment you’ve been waiting for! You loved the last day of school chalkboard printables so much that I had to be sure and give you the first day of school chalkboards, too!

The first day of Kindergarten is a momentous occasion, so I created these adorable printable chalkboard signs when my son started kindergarten. We have used them every year since and they have become quite popular here on the website.

HOW TO USE MY FREE PRINTABLE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL SIGNS:

  1. Choose the page you’d like to print. Each grade is on a different page so you do now have to print them all.
  2. Print them out on 8 ½ x 11-inch cardstock.
  3. If desired, trim to fit an 8×10-inch frame and have your kids hold them in the same frame each year. Or have fun with different frames.

Tools needed for this project:

You may need one or more of these tools to help in printing and creating the projects described above:

  • Color printer – This device offers beautiful color printer on a variety of paper sizes, mobile printing (from your mobile device), scanning and copying and much more!
  • Cardstock – A heavier paper is my first choice when printing anything for display, gift tags and cards or tags.
  • Sharp scissors – needed for cutting cardstock, especially when cutting into shapes for cards and tags.
  • Paper Trimmer – Helpful when trimming to size, especially from 8 ½ x 11-inch paper.

FAQs:

  • How do I print these? You can definitely print these on your home printer, and it doesn’t have to be super high quality. THIS is the one I use. You can also print at Staples, Office Depot or Kinkos, but I do not recommend printing on photo paper since there is a lot of black ink that could smudge and ruin the copy. I use regular CARDSTOCK or even plain printer paper (just make sure to let it dry).
  • How do I get the chalkboard background? The chalkboard background is actually a graphic design style and is printed directly on the paper. No chalkboard required!
  • Do you have TK? No, I’m sorry, I do not have TK for this design. However I do have TK with THIS set. Unfortunately I am not able to make special orders of these signs.
  • I can download some of the pages, but not *this* one. Please make sure that your Adobe software is up to date. Try closing out the page and letting it reload, then select the page you wish to download. Each page has been tested numerous times and with numerous browsers and is working.
  • I can’t print at all, help! If you are having difficulty bring up the pdf for print or download, try opening an incognito window on your browser and then go the the url and try printing again. Occasionally your browser thinks we are spamming you with downloads but I assure you we are not! If incognito doesn’t work, try a different browser, or a different device.
  • Can you just email me the file? I get a lot of requests for this, but unfortunately I am not email to email the files. They are large files and some providers block them. Please try the tips I mentioned above.
  • As with each of my free printables, these are free gifts for my readers. Please do not copy, sell or redistribute in any way without permission.

I have used these every year since Preschool (the oldest is now starting 6th tomorrow), for the life of me I cannot figure out how to download the documents without downloading the extension onto my computer. What happened to the actual link to the PDF? We love these signs and want to keep using them!

Please help! I see the ones for the last day of school, but they aren’t here for the first day of school.

  6. Hi. I am only seeing one download link which opens to the Grade 6 sign. I have tried several different browsers and they all are the same. Your last day of school signs have links to each page to download but this page is not showing them all.
Thanks for the signs – I have used them in previous years and love them!

  7. Hi Kristin,
Thank you so much. I use these each year. Unfortunately when I click on the link today, only the grade 6 printable loads. I can’t seem to access any of the other grades.

      1. Google has changed their permissions with folders and uploads. The link in the post has been updated, however if you are still having trouble please try one of the tips suggested.

  8. Hi Kristin, we are in Australia and have used these adorable printables every year but for some reason can now only see the First Day of Grade 6 when opening the link?? I am needing Grade 4 and Grade 7 urgently if you can help!!!

  9. Hi there. Trying to download the signs however it asks me to create a google account and then says I dont have the right access. Would anyone have a link for the signs that I would use please. Thanks so much.

    1. Hi Catherine, I’m sorry you’re having trouble. Google changed their rules a few months ago and we had to update all of the links. I don’t know why it would ask you to create an account though. Maybe try accessing from a different browser?

  10. Hi Kristin! I’m am going to be doing a post with my daughters’ first day of school photos. We use your free first day of school chalkboard printable every year. Would it be ok to share your link for those that might be interested in printing them for themselves? Thanks!

    1. Hi, the link is working for me. Click the gray download graphic, then click on the grades you want to print.

  13. With the Pandemic, Would you consider making a slightly funny one for ‘First day of homeschool’ or ‘First day of teaching’ etc? It might be a cute picture for how messed up 2020 has been.

  14. Thank you Kristin!! I have been using your “First Day of…” and “Last Day of…” printables for many years now and I can even rush right to them last minute and print them off.

  15. Hi, I use these every year but somehow can’t download this year! I need the first day of third grade one if you happen to be able to email it. Love these signs, thanks for providing then as free printables 🙂

    1. Try opening an incognito window and then go to the site to download. This seems to work for anyone having an issue.

  16. Good morning! I’m trying to download your chalkboard signs for the first day of school, but only found last day of school. Can you send me a link.

    Thank you,
    Kathryn

  17. I love your chalkboard back to school signs. Is there a way you could do some for Australian kids too? Foundation, Grade 1, Grade 2 etc

  18. Hi Kristin! Love your chalkboard signs. I print them every year! I’m having trouble opening the first day ones when you click the banner to download/print them. It is saying the google drive doc “might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.” Do you have a different link or way of sharing? Thanks much!

  19. HI! Thank you for sharing! Could you let me know what the fonts are for these? I’d like to add my daughter’s name before printing! Thank you!

  20. For some reason they disappeared one by one from the google drive folder!! I clicked on something and it pulled it up but the icons said pdf instead of thumbnails. I downloaded those but it said failed-forbidden. I came here and saw you said to try another browser, so I tried refreshing that page. And it worked!! Thank you so much for your generosity. These printables are timeless and beautiful, and I am so grateful!

  21. Thank you so much for these signs and also making them free printables!! I use these each year with my 4 and am so glad to see they are easy to find and easy to print!! Can’t believe we are starting another year!! thank you again!

  22. HI! Love your signs! Do you have a last day of school sign that matches the colored one with books on the side?

  23. I’m having the same trouble as above. I have used the previous year’s chalk boards, but never thought ahead to download for coming years. Now the Google Doc won’t load. I can download the last day of school signs just fine, but I can’t get the first day of school signs. Can you help?

      1. Hi: I’m having the same issues as Sara S, Lindsay and WRC. Any chance you could email the one for 2nd grade? Google Drive just keeps spinning. If they’re zipped, a whole package would be appreciated.
        Thanks,
        Susan Lee sescott9@yahoo.com

        1. I was able to access via Internet Explorer, but not Mozilla Firefox. Very odd, but I’m in good shape now!

    1. Sorry for the trouble, for some reason it’s saying printing is disabled. But you can still download. So click the download button and save the file to your computer. You should then be able to print.

  24. I’m so bummed I’m also having issues trying to download the first day chalkboard signs, the last day work but not the other ones 🙁

    1. Sorry for the trouble, for some reason it’s saying printing is disabled. But you can still download. So click the download button and save the file to your computer. You should then be able to print.

  25. Help!
I have used these the past two years, and had no issues. The last day of school ones pull up fine to print, but I can not get the first day of school ones to show. I even downloaded the new extension that you have via chrome, and they will not show. Years past, they have been right on the site to click, open, and print.

      1. I am also having trouble with the Google drive for both the first and last day of school chalkboard pages. However, I was able to download the other first day of school prints. Thank you so much for making these prints, Kristin!

      2. Sorry for the trouble, for some reason it’s saying printing is disabled. But you can still download. So click the download button and save the file to your computer. You should then be able to print.

  26. Would it be possible to get an editable file? I want to give lots of skin, hair, and eye color options as my class lesson is about diversity.

    Thanks in advance!!

    Susan

    1. Hi Susan, As the printables on my site are copyrighted and free for use, they are not to be altered in any way and I am not able to offer editable files.

    1. Hi Josie, as you scroll down the page there is a graphic that says “click here to download.” Click that graphic and it will take you to the printables.

  27. Thank you so much! We’ve been using your signs since my daughter was in first grade…she’ll now be in third! Your signs are a part of our back to school tradition! xoxo!

  28. I want to print your Printable Chalkboard First Day of School and when I go to the link to download — it brings me to google drive — I can download everything else — even the Last Day of School Chalkboards but not the First Day of School — PLEASE HELP!!

    1. Hi Kari, The printables are to be downloaded from Google drive, where they are housed. If you click the download link it should take you to the files where you can then download to your computer or just print from there.

  29. I’m wondering if you offer a free download of a chalkboard background with a sign that just says “first day of school” without a grade number?

  30. Hi Kristin!

Your first and last day printable chalkboard signs have honestly become so special to me as I mark these milestones, which are going by in a blink with my 4 kiddos. I started using the “All About Me” documents a couple years ago, but can’t seem to find the first day of school ones anymore. Do you still have those available?
Thank you so much for sharing your creative ideas, and hard work to give moms like me special tools to mark the growing up of their babies, which as I’m sure you know all too well…..goes by oh so quickly!

    Much appreciation!

  31. Hi, what is the biggest size that this can be printed? I was hoping it would print out to an 11×14 maybe???

    1. Hi Wendy! Yes, I have printed them at 11×14 and they came out fine. Actually the ones you see in the photo are that size.

  32. I was able to download the pdf. However, I wanted to print at Costco and they don’t take .pdfs. Anyway to get it in .jpg or .bmp?

    1. Sorry I just have them in pdfs. You’d probably be better off printing on cardstock at Kinkos or Staples (it’s cheaper, too!).

  33. Love these signs! I was unable to download all but the Kindergarten one, it said it’s blocked. Are you able to check the link or email it? Thanks!

      1. Above I meant I was able to download all but the kindergarten one, I tried the kindergarten one again and tried it on another computer but it still isn’t working. Can you email it? Thanks for the prompt response 🙂

  34. Truly love your signs. We used them last year but was wondering if you had any with the year on them?

    Thanks,
    Angelica

  35. I used the first/last day of school kindergarten chalkboard sign last year and loved it! I’m sad to see that there is no first day of school chalkboard sign for the 1st grade in the download list!! 🙁

    1. Hi Ashley, Yes it’s there. It’s the 4th up from the bottom. They aren’t in numerical order (not sure why but that was just the way they uploaded). Hope that helps!

      1. Hello. I love your chalkboard signs! I was able to download and print the 2nd grade one but my computer is saying it cannot download the kindergarten one. Is there any way you could send it to me? I would love to have it for my youngest.

        1. Hi Jessica, Please keep trying! Sometimes it takes a few times for the downloads to work given the size of the files. Sorry you’re having trouble!

          1. Hello. I have been able to print several others but not the kindergarten one either. Tomorrow is the first day of school. Help! I have printed from here before in previous years but I am having trouble this year.

          2. Hi, I’m sorry you’re having trouble. We have tested and re-tested the Kindergarten page and have not have trouble. Please try closing out your browser and clear your cache and then try again. Thanks!

  36. I love your signs and have been using them for my own kids and in my classroom for the past few years. Would you be able to make a First Day and Last Day of TK (Transitional Kindergarten) sign? Thanks so much!!

  37. I love your printables! They are so cute! My only problem is the Pre-K printable doesn’t print out correctly. Is anyone else having this problem? Is there anyway to correct this?

  38. Wondering if you have a First day of Montessori that’s set up like your other first-day printables.

    Thank you,
    Heather

  39. I’m new to this and don’t understand how the printable is used to get to the chalkboard? Any advice or help would be appreciated. TIA 🙂

  40. Hello! Any chance you have a First Day of TK chalkboard printables? I can’t find any on Pinterest and don’t have the software to make my own. Thanks!!

  41. I’m the director of a preschool. May I copy your Back to School image to put with our Back to School event, if I include your url?
    Thank you–so cute!

  42. I printed these for this school year but wondering if you ever made a free printable for the “Last day of school signs”? Please let me know as I would love to get it if you did. Thanks Kimmie

  43. I pinned this page to print up the first and last days of school chalk board signs but now I am unable to find the link for the first day of school signs. The posted links are to advertisements. Can you help?

  44. I’d like to save these to my flash drive and print at Staples, etc in order to save my printer but the download keeps ‘failing’. Any ideas?

  45. There looks to be some kind of hidden watermark on the Pre-K print. I tried to print it several different times, and there’s a solid black band that prints right through it with a letter ‘T’. Just to make sure it wasn’t my printer, I tried to print the preschool one and it printed fine.

    1. Hi Meghan, I tried downloading from the site and printing and the Pre-K printable didn’t have a line on it. Maybe try saving it first, and then printing it.

  46. I used the preschool one yesterday (probably should have done pre-k but I like calling it preschool personally because it sounds less grown up and she’s stayed home until now). Thank you so much for sharing!

  47. Thank you so much for these! I just saw on Pinterest that you’re a Bergthold. That’s my maiden name…there aren’t too many of us 🙂

  48. I can’t open the download link 🙁 Any way you can email me the pdf’s of the first and last day of school printables? -Heidi

  49. Used the first day of Kindergarten sign today. Can’t believe my baby’s in school! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  50. I love these! Thank you for sharing. I was playing around with the blank chalkboard template and fonts you used, but I cannot figure out for the life of me how you made the dotted line on top and bottom. Is that part of a font package?

  51. Thank you so much for sharing your signs!! I just ADORE them!! Going to make memories a little sweeter 😉

  52. I can’t get any to open. When i right click and save the image it does not save where i saved it! Help!

  53. Thank you so much! These are such a great idea! Love it! I will be stopping by often! 🙂
    Hugs,
    Georgi

  54. Simply beautiful! Thank you for making this available as a free printable. My students and their families are going to love this. God bless you!

  55. Is there a way to increase the size of the images when printing (for instance, to print 8″ x 10″) but keep the resolution? I downloaded the images as directed but can’t keep the resolution from becoming blurry.

  56. Love these! Thanks so much for sharing. And I really appreciate your tutorial on how to make my own. Thanks again!

  58. Hi,
When I clicked on the picture above “How to Make Your Own Printable Chalkboard Sign” a larger image appeared, but without directions. Is there someplace else I need to click?

  59. I cannot click your “Make your Own Chalkboard Printable” I would like to just change them a bit. I am from Canada and we say Grade One or Grade Two, instead of 2nd Grade 🙂 Andrea

  60. These chalkboard sign is great! How do you make one? I tried clicking on the “free printable” but that did not work. Thanks!

    1. When you click on “Download the free printables here” link, it will take you to a site where you can download the images. When you are there, just choose the ones you’d like to download.

    2. I click on the individual ones and nothing happens. Will have to try it from another computer maybe.

  61. These are really cute! I found them a little too late, as my kids went back to school this past Monday. They are in a year round school, and are in for 9 weeks out for 3. I love interesting fonts!

  63. Thank you so much! Only six weeks left until school starts for us. Can’t wait to see the transformation at the end of the year. Thanks for making these signs.
