Air Fryer Chicken Tenders come out golden and crunchy on the outside with juicy chicken inside, and they beat anything from the freezer aisle. Six simple ingredients, one basket, and about 30 minutes start to finish. These are the tenders my kids ask for on repeat.

Before You Get Started

Homemade tenders are easy, but a few things make the difference between crispy and disappointing. Here is what matters most.

  • Cook in a single layer — Hot air needs to circulate around every piece. Crowd the basket and you get pale, soggy spots instead of crunch.
  • Chill the breaded tenders for 10 minutes — A short rest in the freezer sets the coating so it stays on the chicken instead of sliding off in the basket.
  • Spray them before they go in — A light coat of olive oil spray is what turns the panko golden brown. Skip it and they cook through but stay pale.

Panko vs Regular Breadcrumbs

Panko is made from crustless bread and the crumbs are wide and flaky rather than fine and sandy. Those bigger flakes leave space for air to move through the coating, which is exactly what an air fryer needs to crisp things up.

Regular or seasoned breadcrumbs absolutely work if that is what is in the pantry. You will just get a tighter, denser coating instead of that shattering crunch.

RECIPE OVERVIEW

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Tenders

See the recipe card below for full, detailed instructions

A three-bowl breading station keeps this quick and keeps your hands manageable. Set everything up before you touch the chicken and the whole thing takes about ten minutes.

1. Set Up Your Breading Station

Whisk the flour, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper together in one shallow bowl. Beat the egg in a second bowl. Add the panko to a third.

  • Parmesan: One reader stirred grated parmesan into the panko and loved the result. A few tablespoons adds salty depth without changing anything else.

2. Cut the Chicken

If you bought chicken tenders, you are already set.

If you are starting with breasts, slice each one into 3 or 4 strips of roughly the same thickness. Even sizing matters more than shape here, since mismatched pieces finish at different times.

3. Bread Each Tender

Dredge in the seasoned flour and shake off the excess, dip in the egg and let it drip, then press into the panko so the crumbs stick.

Use one hand for the dry bowls and one for the egg to keep your fingers from turning into breaded clubs.

4. Chill Briefly

Lay the breaded tenders on a small sheet pan and freeze for 10 minutes.

  • Don’t skip the chill: Skipping this step is the reason breading ends up loose in the bottom of the basket.

5. Preheat and Arrange

Preheat the air fryer for 3 to 5 minutes so the tenders hit hot metal right away. Arrange them in a single layer with a little space between each one, then spray lightly with olive oil.

Work in batches: Most baskets fit 4 or 5 tenders comfortably. Hold the first batch on a rack in a 200°F oven while the second cooks.

6. Air Fry Until 165°F

Cook at 325°F for 15 to 20 minutes depending on thickness. There is no need to flip them since the mesh basket lets air circulate underneath, and too much handling knocks the panko loose.

They are done when an instant-read thermometer hits 165°F in the thickest part.

  • If yours came out soggy, it is one of three things: The basket was too full, they never got sprayed with oil, or the breading went in without chilling first.

The Best Dipping Sauces

A chicken tender without a sauce is like a hot dog without a bun. It still tastes fine, but the sauce is what finishes it.

Honey Mustard Dip is the one that disappears fastest at our house, and Homemade BBQ Sauce is the runner-up.

For something with a little more going on, try Nacho Cheese Sauce or Jalapeño Ranch Dressing.

Ketchup is always welcome too, and a few drops of hot sauce stirred in gives it a little kick without scaring off the kids.

What to Serve Alongside

Tenders are the easy part of dinner. What goes next to them is what turns it into a meal, and the best pairings here are the ones that do not need much attention while the air fryer is running.

Fries are the obvious move, and mac and cheese is the one my kids vote for every time. If you want something green on the plate, broccoli in the air fryer goes in right after the tenders come out.

Storage Tips

Storage and Reheating

Store cooked tenders in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. Use an airtight container and let them cool first so condensation does not soften the coating.

Reheat them in the air fryer, not the microwave. Three to four minutes at 350°F brings the crunch right back. The microwave will get them hot but the breading turns rubbery.

Freeze them breaded and uncooked. This is my favorite shortcut. Bread the tenders, lay them out in a single layer on a sheet pan, freeze for 30 to 45 minutes until firm, then transfer to a freezer bag. Label the bag with the date and use them within 3 months.

Cook frozen tenders straight from the freezer. No thawing needed. Add about 5 minutes to the cook time and check that the center reaches 165°F before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cook these at a higher temperature?
You can, and plenty of air fryer tender recipes run at 375°F or 400°F. Just know that the panko browns faster than the chicken cooks at those temps, so start checking around 10 minutes and pull them the moment they hit 165°F inside. The 325°F setting here gives the coating and the chicken time to finish together, which is why I stick with it.

Do you need to flip chicken tenders in the air fryer?
No. The mesh basket lets hot air move underneath each piece, so both sides crisp on their own. Flipping mostly just knocks panko loose, though a gentle shake partway through is fine if some pieces look uneven.

Why did my breading fall off?
Almost always one of three things: the tenders were still wet when they hit the flour, the excess flour and egg were not shaken off between bowls, or the breaded chicken went straight into the basket without chilling. Pat the chicken dry, shake between each bowl, and give them 10 minutes in the freezer.

Can I make these without breadcrumbs?
Yes. Seasoned flour alone gives you a thinner, crackly coating that still crisps up nicely. Crushed pork rinds or grated parmesan work well too if you want the crunch without the carbs. Cooking time stays about the same, so go by internal temperature rather than the clock.

Instructions

  • In a shallow bowl, whisk together the flour, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Add the panko to a second shallow bowl. Whisk the egg in a third.
  • If using chicken breasts, cut each breast into 3 or 4 even tenders.
  • Coat each tender in the seasoned flour, then the egg, then press firmly into the panko to coat.
  • Arrange the breaded tenders on a small sheet pan and freeze for 10 minutes to set the coating.
  • Preheat the air fryer for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Arrange the tenders in a single layer in the basket, leaving space between each piece, and spray lightly with olive oil.
  • Cook at 325°F for 15 to 20 minutes, depending on thickness, until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. No flipping needed.
  • Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Panko is preferred for the crispiest coating, but regular or seasoned breadcrumbs will work.
  • Do not crowd the basket. Cook in batches and hold the first batch on a rack in a 200°F oven.
  • The 10-minute freeze is the key step for keeping breading on the chicken.
  • Go by temperature, not time. Tenders are done at 165°F in the thickest part.
  • Add parmesan to the panko for extra flavor. A few tablespoons is plenty.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Freeze breaded, uncooked tenders in a single layer for 30 to 45 minutes, then bag for up to 3 months. Cook from frozen and add about 5 minutes.
