What Makes a Margarita “Cadillac”?

A Cadillac Margarita is the upgraded, top-shelf version of a classic margarita. The “Cadillac” name comes from the quality of the liquor. It calls for a reposado tequila instead of blanco and Grand Marnier in place of regular triple sec. Those two swaps give you a smoother, more nuanced cocktail with warm cognac notes from the Grand Marnier and a deeper, oak-aged tequila base. 

Same shape as a classic margarita, but every layer is a little more grown-up.

3 Things That Really Matter For a Cadillac Margarita

A Cadillac Margarita has just three ingredients, so each one earns its place. These are the calls that matter most.

  • Use a quality reposado tequila. Reposado is what defines a Cadillac. A mid-range bottle like Patron or Herradura is the sweet spot.
  • Choose Grand Marnier over Cointreau. Grand Marnier’s cognac base gives the drink its signature warmth and depth. Cointreau works in a pinch but flattens it.
  • Squeeze fresh lime juice. Bottled lime juice has a flat, slightly bitter edge that will tank a 3-ingredient drink. Fresh is non-negotiable here.

How to Make a Cadillac Margarita

This is a shaken cocktail served on the rocks. Five minutes start to finish, no special equipment beyond a cocktail shaker.

Step 1: Salt the rim

Pour a thin layer of coarse salt onto a small plate. Run a lime wedge around the outside edge of your glass to wet the rim, then dip the glass into the salt and gently rotate. 

Salt the rim before you fill the glass with ice so you’re not fighting condensation.

  • A note on the salt rim: Salt is traditional, but some people skip it on a Cadillac so it doesn’t compete with the cognac notes from the Grand Marnier. Try it both ways and pick your side.

Step 2: Shake with ice

Add the reposado tequila, Grand Marnier, and fresh lime juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. 

If you want a slightly sweeter drink, add half an ounce of agave syrup or simple syrup at this point. 

Secure the lid and shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is cold and frosty.

Step 3: Strain over fresh ice

Fill your prepared glass with fresh ice cubes (the bigger the better, since they melt slower). Strain the cocktail into the glass and garnish with a lime wheel or wedge.

  • Fancier Pour Tip: Float the Grand Marnier — Hold back the Grand Marnier and float it on top instead of shaking it. Pour the shaken tequila and lime over ice, then slowly pour the Grand Marnier over the back of a spoon so it sits on top in a darker layer. Pretty in the glass, identical in the sip.

Make It Frozen

  1. Add 6 ounces reposado tequila, 4 ounces Grand Marnier, 3 ounces fresh lime juice, and 1 to 2 ounces agave syrup or simple syrup to a blender. Frozen drinks usually need a touch more sweetness to balance the dilution from the ice.
  2. Add 4 to 5 cups of ice. If your blender is struggling, add the ice gradually rather than all at once.
  3. Blend on high until smooth, then pour into salt-rimmed glasses and garnish with a lime wheel.

Make It for a Crowd

A pitcher is the easiest way to serve a group without playing bartender all night.

When you’re ready to serve, fill each individual glass with ice and pour over. Salt the rims just before pouring.

Multiply the single-serving measurements by however many drinks you want.

Combine the tequila, Grand Marnier, and fresh lime juice in a pitcher and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve. Don’t add ice to the pitcher, it’ll water down the drink.

Cadillac Margaritas are best fresh, but the components prep well for entertaining.

  • Mix the cocktail base early. Combine the tequila, Grand Marnier, and lime juice in a covered pitcher up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerate. Hold off on the ice and salt the rims until you’re ready to serve.
  • Squeeze the lime juice last. Fresh lime juice loses its punch after about 24 hours. If you’re prepping more than a day ahead, mix just the tequila and Grand Marnier and add the lime right before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a margarita a “Cadillac”?
Two ingredient swaps. Reposado tequila replaces blanco for a smoother, oak-aged base, and Grand Marnier replaces standard triple sec for warm cognac notes. The “Cadillac” name signals top-shelf liquor, the way you’d call something “the Cadillac” of its category.

Can I substitute Cointreau for Grand Marnier?
You can, but the drink won’t taste the same. Cointreau is a triple sec made from orange peels and sugar beet alcohol. Grand Marnier blends bitter orange with cognac, which gives it a warmer, deeper flavor. If you only have Cointreau, you’ll end up closer to a high-end classic margarita than a true Cadillac.

What’s the best ratio for a Cadillac Margarita?
The ratio I use is 1.5 ounces reposado tequila, 1 ounce Grand Marnier, and 0.75 ounces fresh lime juice. That follows a roughly 2:1.5:1 structure that keeps the tequila in the lead while letting the Grand Marnier and lime balance each other out.

Can I make this in a pitcher?
Yes, and it’s the easiest way to serve a group. Multiply the measurements by however many drinks you need, mix everything except the ice in a pitcher, and refrigerate. Pour over individually iced glasses when you’re ready to serve.

Notes

  • Tequila quality. Reposado is the traditional choice and gives the drink its smoother, oak-aged character. A mid-range bottle is plenty.
  • Grand Marnier vs. Cointreau. Grand Marnier is the right call here. Cointreau works as a substitute but the drink will taste closer to a regular margarita.
  • Sweetness. The agave or simple syrup is optional. Add it if your lime juice is especially tart or you prefer a sweeter cocktail.
  • Float technique. For a fancier presentation, hold back the Grand Marnier, shake the tequila and lime alone, then float the Grand Marnier on top by pouring slowly over the back of a spoon.
  • Pitcher version. Multiply the measurements, combine everything except ice in a pitcher, refrigerate, and pour over individually iced glasses.
  • Frozen version. Blend 6 oz tequila, 4 oz Grand Marnier, 3 oz lime juice, 1 to 2 oz agave or simple syrup, and 4 to 5 cups ice for 4 frozen servings.
  • Storage. Mixed cocktail (without ice) keeps in the fridge for up to 2 days. Hold off on adding fresh lime juice if making more than 24 hours ahead.
