Taco Pizza Ingredients

With tons of fresh ingredients, you can’t go wrong with this kid-friendly recipe!

  • Pizza Dough Mix – You need a 6.5-ounce package of mix. You could also use a prepared pizza dough from the store or even make your own favorite recipe from scratch.
  • Refried Beans – One can, and I always opt for a can of vegetarian beans since they tend to be less greasy. *Hot Tip – Add 1-2 tablespoons of milk to your beans to make them extra creamy. Or, you can make refried beans from scratch!
  • Lean Ground Beef – Cook it how you’d normally cook ground beef for tacos.
  • Taco Seasoning Make it from scratch or use a packet of the premade mix.

Taco Pizza Toppings

  • Shredded Cheese – A Mexican blend works really well here, or simply a mix of cheddar and Jack cheeses. Freshly grated will melt better than pre-shredded.
  • Shredded Lettuce – Iceberg is the obvious choice since it’s commonly used for tacos, but consider Romaine or butter lettuce good options as well.
  • Tomatoes – I like to use Roma tomatoes because they don’t have much liquid and are easy to chop up. Cherry or grape tomatoes are nice, too.
  • Taco Sauce, Salsa, Guacamole, and Sour Cream – all good options for toppings.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make this recipe in advance?

Yes, you can prepare the pizza dough and taco meat ahead of time and assemble just before baking.

Can I use store-bought pizza dough?

Absolutely, store-bought pizza dough or even a fully baked crust can save time and work well in this recipe.

What’s the best cheese to use?

You can use any kind of meltable cheese, but I like to use a Mexican blend, or a simple Cheddar-Jack. Either way, freshly grated is superior to pre-shredded in a bag.

Can I customize the toppings?

Absolutely! Use any toppings you like. The ones listed are just the most common, but you could add sliced olives, jalapenos, red onions, or cilantro.

Can I use chicken instead of beef?

The meat used for my Crockpot Chicken Tacos would be delicious, or you could swap ground chicken or ground turkey for the ground beef.

Serving Suggestions

  • Top your finished pizza with the fresh vegetables and any other favorite taco toppings. Black olives, avocado, and green onion would all make great additions to the lettuce and tomatoes. Drizzle the pizza with taco sauce or salsa and serve with a dollop of sour cream.
  • If you have some picky eaters in your family, serve the baked pizza with the toppings on the side. This allows everyone to choose how spicy of salsa they want or what vegetables work for them.
  • This recipe makes 4-6 servings, so you may have leftovers which are great reheated. In this case, it’s best to serve with the toppings on the side.

Helpful Tips

  1. Preheat the oven for better crust cooking.
  2. Allow your pizza dough to come to room temperature before rolling it out.
  3. Cook the taco meat thoroughly and drain any excess grease.
  4. Use fresh ingredients for the best flavors.
  5. Sprinkle a little cornmeal on the pizza stone or baking sheet to prevent sticking.
  6. Bake your pizza on the lowest oven rack for a crispier crust.
  7. Don’t overload your pizza with toppings as it could make the crust soggy.
  8. Let the pizza rest for a few minutes after baking before slicing to allow the cheese to set.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Notes

Dough is best if you prepare it an hour or more before baking the pizza.
Other toppings options include diced avocado, chopped cilantro and sliced olives.
