What to Dip

  • Classic crackers and chips – Tortilla chips, pita chips, water crackers, butter crackers, and club crackers work with almost any dip. Keep a variety on hand so guests have options.
  • Bread options – Sliced baguette, toasted crostini, breadsticks, and soft pretzels are great for hot cheesy dips and cream cheese-based spreads.
  • Fresh vegetables – Carrots, celery, bell peppers, cucumber rounds, cherry tomatoes, and broccoli florets add color and crunch. A veggie tray is perfect for lighter dips and guests watching their carbs.
  • Low-carb alternatives – Endive leaves, cucumber slices, and bell pepper strips work well for keto-friendly guests.
  • Sweet dipper pairings – Graham crackers, vanilla wafers, apple slices, strawberries, pretzels, and cookies are perfect for dessert dips.

Dip Serving & Presentation Tips

  • Mix hot and cold dips – Aim for 2-3 hot dips and 2 cold options so guests have variety throughout the party. Hot dips draw people in first, while cold dips hold up longer on the table.
  • Plan your quantities – Count on about 3-4 tablespoons of dip per person if serving multiple appetizers, or ½ cup per person if dips are your main focus. For parties with 15+ guests, make 4-5 different dips.
  • Keep hot dips warm – Use slow cookers on the “warm” setting, chafing dishes, or warming trays so dips stay at the right temperature. Check every 20-30 minutes and stir gently to prevent edges from drying out.
  • Add festive garnishes – Top dips with red and green elements like diced red peppers, pomegranate arils, fresh herbs (parsley, cilantro, chives), or cherry tomatoes. Simple garnishes make dips look holiday-ready.
  • Create levels on your table – Use cake stands, wooden boards, or stacked books under platters to create different heights. This makes the spread look more abundant and helps guests reach everything easily.

More Dip Tips

  • Make dips ahead for easy hosting — Most cold dips can be made 1-2 days ahead and stored covered in the refrigerator. Hot dips can be assembled (but not baked) up to 24 hours ahead, then baked just before serving. Add fresh garnishes right before guests arrive.
  • Soften cream cheese for smooth blending — Many of these dips use cream cheese as a base. Let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before mixing, or microwave for 10-15 seconds to soften for easier blending.
  • Fix dips that get too thick – Thin them out with a splash of milk, cream, or the liquid from the recipe (like pickle juice for ranch dips or lime juice for Mexican dips). Stir well and add a tablespoon at a time until you reach the right consistency.
  • Transport dips safely – Cold dips travel well in sealed containers stored in a cooler with ice packs. For hot dips, assemble in a disposable aluminum pan, cover tightly, and bake at your destination. Or bake at home, wrap in foil and towels to keep warm, and serve within an hour.
